The Global Chinese Positive Psychology Association (GCPPA)
The Global Chinese Positive Psychology Association (GCPPA) is a scientific, non-profit, and global association founded by a group of young Chinese scholars as a new initiative to promote well-being and every positive aspect of humanity in the Chinese community. Our core founding members received education from world-renowned institutes such as Universities of Cambridge, Oxford, Pennsylvania, Harvard, Peking University, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong etc. Their robust education background in psychology equipped them to currently contribute to various areas such as academics, philanthropy, health-care, education, law and commerce. The association is advised by a group of prestigious psychologists, including Prof. Martin Seligman, the father of positive psychology, Prof. Felicia Huppert, the director of the Well-being Institute at Cambridge, and Prof. Fanny Cheung, the director of Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies, CUHK. The association maintains partnerships with world-class reseach centres and organisations, including the Well-being Centre at Cambridge, the Insitute of Coaching Centre at Harvard, the Positive Psychology Centre at Pennsylvania , and the International Positive Psychology Association (IPPA).
Origin:
Traditionally, the 3 main missions of psychology are curing mental illnesses, identifying and nurturing human talents, and making human life more productive and fulfilling. After World War II, psychology almost put all its focus on curing mental illnesses. In 1998, when Martin Seligman, a contemporary master in psychology, was elected president of the American Psychology Association, he launched as the central theme of his tenure the idea of studying the positive functioning of people. In the decade that followed, positive psychology movement has achieved signficant impacts in terms of scientific research findings and their applications. Mr. Timothy T.C. So, a Hong Kong born young Chinese psychologist affiliated to the University of Cambridge, conceived the idea of founding and coordinating the GCPPA in 2009. The association was registered in the UK and Hong Kong at the first day of Year of Tiger in 2010, becoming the only global association setting its first priority upon the psychological well-being of the worldwide Chinese population.
Mission:
The association envisages that over 51% of the worldwide Chinese population will be considered flourishing, as a response to the vision established by Martin Seligman in the First World Congress of Positive Psychology that 51% of the World's population could be regarded as flourishing.
Objectives:
To materialise its mission, GCPPA furnishes the following objectives:
1. To establish a growing network connecting academic institutes, public organizations, private firms, non-profit organizations, health organizations, and government policy units with an interest in scientific study of well-being and its applications;
2. To provide a platform for talented young scientists to advance the knowledge of the science of well-being and explore novel ways to apply their knowledge;
3. To establish platform to exchange knowledge of the science of well-being between China and the West via its representation in China, the UK and Hong Kong ;
4. To work closely with the Chinese Government, specifically Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health and other policy-making bodies to ensure that issues of well-being and positive psychology are addressed by 1.) developing strategies to enhance citizen's well-being and 2.) evaluating the effectiveness of policies in terms of economic output;
5. To develop a reputation for providing reliable, evidence-based information about the nature of well-being through the Internet and media
Areas of Engagement:
1. Scientific research
The GCPPA is a scientific institute focusing on how evidence-based positive psychology can benefit Chinese community. Its founding president, Timothy So, has, in conjunction with the Well-being Institute at University of Cambridge and the Institute of Coaching at Harvard University, conducted various investigations which examine positive psychology interventions in coaching, the characteristics of flourishing individuals, and operationally defined and scientifically measured a new psychological construct – flourishing. Besides, GCPPA is in the progress of establishing collaborations with the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, one of the largest charitable organisations in Hong Kong, as the first attempt to define a happiness index for schools in Hong Kong.
2. Publications
The GCPPA endeavours to encourage the application and practice of positive psychology in contemporary Chinese society, by publishing in the Chinese language through different channels, including newspapers, university newsletters, online journals and magazines. At present, GCPPA publishes articles at Hong Kong Economic Journal, and writes weekly in a column – ‘The Science of Wellbeing’ on Hong Kong Daily News. To address a more global audience, GCPPA regularly writes in English for the Positive Psychology News Daily, a research-based online daily publication with more than 1 million readers. GCPPA members also help with coordinating the Chinese Positive Psychology News Daily to deliver first hand positive psychology knowledge in Chinese language, the common cultural key to billions of Chinese people worldwide.
3. Assessment Centre
One of the most poignant themes of positive psychology is self-understanding, for this is a gateway to self-improvement and self-appreciation, or the first step to mental health, and thus, flourishing. GCPPA understands the rarity of scientifically validated scales for thorough self-assessment in the Chinese public, and, as a result, the association establishes an online assessment centre as a portal to such assessment tools. To ensure the centre's quality, GCPPA has been receiving generous support and advice from Cambridge University Psychometric Centre and University of Pennsylvania Positive Psychology Centre.
4. Conference and events
GCPPA positions itself as a keen participant of conferences and events worldwide. To bridge the East with the West, the association co-hosts the First International Positive Psychology Conference in China, invites international scholars in positive psychology as keynote speakers, and conducts a symposium session. GCPPA is looking forward to participate in a panel discussion at the coming Boao Forum for Asia Internationl Conference in October 2010, which involves various disciplines commonly interested in the well-being of China and Asia. Apart from conferences, GCPPA holds seminars and workshops on a non-profit basis for private and public organisations.
As Lao-tsu, a philosopher of ancient China said, "Journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step." GCPPA, be the organisation young and its engagements limited, believes accumulation of its every endeavour can lead to significant contribution to the well-being of Chinese people all over the world. Similarly, via its role as a bridge between the East and West, and the academic and the public, GCPPA eyes on a flourishing China in the future.
